Construction
1. Site Preparation
Before the SportSunShelters™ can be installed, the site must be properly prepared, and the exact locations where the shelters are to go will need to be identified and measured.
- Chain link fencing
- Any chain link fencing that is in the way of the SportSunShelters™ should be removed before the site can be properly prepared.
- For sports such as baseball and softball, chain link fencing may be required in front of the benches. The cost and installation of such fencing is not included in the SportSunShelters™ package and is the responsibility of the organization contracting for the shelters.
- Concrete slabs
- Concrete slabs that measure 10’ x 30’ x 1’ to 2’ deep need to be poured in the exact locations where the shelters are to go.
- The cost and installation of these slabs is not included in the SportSunShelters™ package.
2. Delivery of the SportSunShelters™
- The delivery of the shelters should be coordinated by someone in your organization.
- This person should be on hand when the delivery is made to make sure that the materials are placed in locations that are convenient for your construction crews.
3. Your Construction Crews
- You will need a crew for each shelter if the job is to be completed in one day.
- Each crew should consist of a foreman and four or five workers.
- It is important that your construction crews are made up of volunteers with carpentry and building experience.
- There must be a construction foreman who has had several years of construction experience as a foreman and who can read plans.
- The construction workers should all have had work experience as carpenters and builders or are known to be able to effectively do their own carpentry.
4. Understanding the plans
- The plans for the SportSunShelters™ are clear and easy to understand for anyone with construction experience.
- It is critical that the plans be understood before the construction process begins.
5. Construction timetable
- Frame erection: three to four hours
- Siding and roof installation: three to four hours
- Signage: half an hour
6. Case History
Belchertown, MA — Hulmes-Warner Field
The SportSunShelters™ that were built in Belchertown, a small community east of Springfield, were completed in eight hours. The photos that appear below document the construction process, which was completed in the fall of 2006. The site—Hulmes-Warner Field—had been properly prepared before the prefabricated SportSunShelter™ kit arrived. The chain link fencing had been removed from the area where the two shelters would go, and the cement had been poured for the slabs that the shelters would rest on.
