The Foundation

The Melanoma Foundation of New England, formerly the Massachusetts Melanoma Foundation, was founded in 1999 by Mel and Marilyn Rubin following the tragic loss of their son, Mark, to melanoma. The Foundation was created to combat the rising rate of melanoma and melanoma deaths. The Foundation provides a variety of educational programs targeting the prevention and early detection of skin cancer and melanoma for both children and adults.

The Foundation also assists patients and their caregivers struggling with melanoma by offering support groups, educational programs, and Billy's Buddies, a new one-on-one patient advocacy and support program. These programs are all free. The Foundation supports population-based research looking for tools to help change behavior.

During 2007, the Foundation will be expanding its services throughout New England by making new connections and by developing the contacts that our predecessor, the Massachusetts Melanoma Foundation, had made in Connecticut, Rhode Island, Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont.

A Medical Advisory Board and Board of Directors comprised of business people, health care professionals, and leading melanoma specialists provide guidance for the Foundation. Our fundraising events provide funding for education and support programs aimed at prevention, early detection, support, and research.
