2. Design

The Melanoma Foundation of New England developed SportSunShelters™—sun shelters or dugouts with a different twist—to keep players out of the sun AND to make a nice addition to the fields where they are installed. Most fields today either have no sun shelters or rudimentary shelters that do not add much to their surroundings.

The design of SportSunShelters™ also allows for excellent air circulation as it is important to keep the players cool during hot summer days.

The award-winning design of our SportSunShelters™ was created by Richard Seltenrich, then an architect with CBT Architects, a highly regarded Boston architectural firm.

3. Prefabricated Assembly

The SportSunShelters™ come in kits with all of the structural panels pre-assembled and the posts and beams cut to size, however the sheet metal for the roof and side panels needs to be cut to size and then bolted in place.

A team of five or six volunteers with construction experience should be able to assemble and complete one sun shelter in a day.

Prefabricated panels simplify the job.

Cross beams fit into designated positions.

4. The Construction Components

Each prefabricated SportSunShelters™ kit comes with:

All of the materials for the sun shelters are of high quality and include:

The following components of the project are not included with the SportSunShelters™ kit and must be arranged for separately:

5. Signage

Each sun shelter comes with five signs at the roofline and two signs that are to be fastened to the chain link fencing near the sun shelter. Inclusion of these signs is part of the agreement with the Melanoma Foundation of New England.

The five roofline signs include a sign in the center for the name of the field that is 12" high by approximately 110" wide, and smaller signs to either side that are 8" high by 45" wide.

Roofline signage

The roofline signs should include the name of your organization, the association your organization belongs to, the name of the field, your parks department or field owner, and the Melanoma Foundation of New England.

There are two versions of the SunSafe Sports signs: one for Little League sun shelters and one for all others.

This sign is intended for SportSunShelters™ installed on Little League fields.

This sign is intended for SportSunShelters™ used on all other fields.
